Rob Ickes performs "Reuben" at the 2010 Bluegrass All Star Jam at the Stillwater Community Center in Stillwater, OK on 1/23/10. Along with Rob are Terry Baucom on banjo, Mike Bub on bass, Don Rigsby on mandolin, Kenny Smith on guitar and Mike Cleveland on fiddle.
@Steelgato I agree. It comes down to personal preference. They exhibit two different styles. However, regarding the tuning: Douglas is more likely to capo or grab one of his alternatively-tuned guitars on stage, whereas Ickes does the majority of his playing in open G. Two different approaches--but both very skilled.

Ranking players at this level is futile. Ickes and Douglas are both on the frontier of what can be done with a Dobro in G tuning. Both awesome.

@N183CS Please tell me you said that not knowing about Mr. Jerry Douglas, i've been playing dobro for 13 years so that's almost an ignorant statement but before it becomes ignorant i guess opinion comes in. don't get me wrong, Ickes is an outstanding player but no Jerry Douglas.

Rob Ickes is a true master. As far as bluegrass goes in my opinion there is no one better.

That is just awesome. I am a miner and I really like that old sound you have. It makes me think back to the coal miners, like my great grandpa that had it much worse than we have it today and had music to escape.
