Mixed Reality Mobile Phones through Environmental Sensing

LightSense is a method that allows a mobile phone to present context-sensitive information, as it is held over different parts of a display.

The video shows the Stockholm subway map, which provides an abstract representation of the city, a technique employed by many other subway maps in the world to simplify the understanding of the subway network. We augment the information provided by the map, using a spatially aware mobile phone. As the phone is moved on the surface and held over different subway stops, geographical maps of the neighbour are shown in its display. The user may also zoom in and out, by varying the distance from the surface (i.e., by lifting the phone, or by bringing it closer).
