The best Aliens vs Predator game so far has been re-released on Steam in a version called "Classic 2000", which is compatible with modern operating systems and graphics cards.

In my opinion, Rebellion's first AvP (not counting the earlier Jaguar game) is one of the most memorable shooters from the late 90s due to the game's great atmosphere, minimalist design and hardcore difficulty. AvP comes with three campaigns - one for each species (human, alien, predator) - and the gameplay in each segment feels radically different from the others. If you haven't checked out AvP yet, now is a great time to do so.

The gameplay in this video is not from the regular singleplayer mode but instead shows the unique "Skirmish" mode, in which a player can test his or her skills by fighting off seemingly endless waves of enemies.

User "Xenomrph" has made a truly excellent Let's Play of this game (including extensive commentary about how the game fits into the overall AvP lore), and here's a link to his playthrough of the first Marine level. Note: Xenomrph's videos were initially available on the now-defunct video sharing site GameVee where they benefitted substantially from increased resolution and a larger view window.

Also, here's a great article from RPS about the game:

  • the old one seems too easy, look at how fast the marine is moving around, he's outrunning the aliens. In the new one, you can't do that at all. Aliens are made to be fast, while marines are humanly slow.

  • @sixamsedna Ha, believe me; the original AvP is NOT "too easy". The Marine is nowhere near as fast as the Alien in this game either, and can't really outrun an Alien that is specifically targetting him (...which is why I get surrounded and killed repeatedly in this video).

  • @Demiath have you played the remake? unless you're in a pack of marines you can do damage to preds and aliens. I saw your vid, and with the automated machine gun you're easily killing them... try doing that in the remake, it's not always easy.

  • @sixamsedna No, I have not played the new AvP and I have no intention of doing so. As for difficulty and balancing in AvP 2000, keep in mind that this video shows a very specific and atypical game mode which is all about giving you maxed-out weapons against literally hundreds of AI-controlled enemies. The singleplayer missions, by contrast, are much more focused on encountering smaller groups of aliens with limited firepower at your disposal.

  • will the steam version work on an old PC

  • I don't know for sure, but if the old PC can run the original version of AvP it should probably be able to run the Steam version just as well. Just be sure to check the system requirements at the store page for AvP 2000 on Steam.

  • Just buyed this on steam:)

  • This was and is by far the best AVP game of all time, the 2010 version dosn't even come close to the horror and action that this game delivers. Holy shit it's good and sadly we've never been able to top it.

  • Best classic game i ever brought

  • IF this game didn't have such fucking amazing sound design and great graphics, I wouldn't be able to recognize this has anything to do with AVP. Everybody moves WAY too fast, but it is a hell of a fun time.

  • @sixamsedna Wrong, the gameplay in 2010 is just slowed down. The aliens are slower and so are the marine. I liked the 1999 version better

  • @Demiath Agree with you here. And in the 2010 version you can block alien hits and even knock down an alien! The aliens in 2010 version looks and acts much smarter I must admit. They sneak up on you, run at you if you turn your back against them, jump at ceilings, roof. They are very good at dodging your shots

  • this was the definitive avp game...avp2 had nowhere near the fear inducing momentsa....this was way more dark and lonely...loved it soooo much

  • Oh god, Nostromo. Why are you such a big and twisty map.
