Dense mats of the water fern Azolla cover the carapaces of the red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans), common turtles in the bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) swamp ("Cypress Lake") on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The turtles are also seen sunning near the "knees" (pneumatophores) of the bald cypress along with foraging boat-tailed grackles (Quiscalus major). Filmed in April, 2009, by Suzanne Fredericq.
