http://www.ted.com The euphonium, a tuba-like musical instrument, is rarely heard outside of traditional brass bands. Young euph prodigy Matthew White uses hip-hop rhythms and a wild new vocal technique to bring a fresh sound to this underappreciated horn.

  • What's up with all the dislikes? Young musician doing a really fine job on original music, what's wrong with that?

  • @sharkbear what's wrong with it is that he ripped it off this guy on sousaphone. watch?v=MypmT0kwBR0

  • I for one, have been playing the Euphonium for going on 4 years now, and I'm a sophmore and already 1st chair out of all my school(10 euphoniums), but even I have to admit, I would probably take at least 6 months to get this piece down, just for the embrouchure changes.

  • @videofanYT00 I apologize, I did not mean to direct that comment at anyones opinion. I meant to direct it to the many people that are attacking his ability. Whether you think its good or bad you can not say he didn't perform this well. I am a Euphonium player in college myself and I don't much care for this type of music either, but I'm sure Matthew put in a lot of work on this piece. I just ask that everyone respect his ability regardless of their opinions.

  • @eupwnium070 we are not complaining about if its hard or not or his appeal. It just sounds BAD.

  • To everyone that does not like this, HE DID THIS TO ENTERTAIN, not to show off. True, it may not be technically demanding HOWEVER, his flexibility, time, and appeal to the audience was fantastic. The audience really enjoyed the performance and they will remember it. That is the most important thing a performer should strive for. Also, this guy will completely school any of you on Euphonium, He was just signed on to besson with the likes of Steven Mead and David Childs.

  • Euphonium player here. that's really not hard to do at all. It more of a question of "should" rather than "can"

  • Impressive flexibility, but lacks in tone and technique. Mainly articulation. Love it, however... TED never fails to entertain and fascinate me.

  • Felicito a este joven tan valioso. Quienes critican es porque sienten angustia por el bien ajeno.

  • @MrTrombonerdude Exactly, why cant everyone understand that he's good enough to be on TV and Youtube, yet they have the nerve to say he sucks.

  • Blimey, just cause all you snobs can't be as good as this kid doesn't mean you have to bite his head of for it!

  • ... you have entirely missed the point of Euphonium. Euphony- The quality of being pleasing to the ear. This is like rubbing a cat the wrong way with a wet hand.
