Fantastic opening from the 'Guardian of the Light' album. One of the best albums of that time (in my opinion). And this guy is still busy, I think for about 40 years now...

  • Oh man! I used to have this and can't find it anywhere. Dude, you gotta post more from this. Isn't that Stanley Clarke on bass? Great post!

  • The third song 'Shane' has Byron Miller on Bass. The album contains an incredible bunch of artists: John Robinson (drums), Tommy Vicari, Michael Sembello, Jeffrey Osborne, Larry Wiliams, Lynn Davis, Jerry Hey, Leon Ndugu Chancler, etc. etc....

  • i gotta disagree...that was louis on "shane" too...i remember because it took me years to even get close to playing that line...LOL

  • Of course you're right! I was way off here... Shane's got Louis Johnson on bass!!!

  • @cirrusmajor are you saying there are more people with this style? because to me it is obviously Mr johnson on the bass here.. no question in my mind.

  • @bbBassYo You're absolutely right! BUT.... it could also be FunkStar650 is his early years.... ;-)

  • I'm one of thiose hard core slappers and no one slaps or sounds like Louis Johnson. Period. They may have played on MM basses and they sound simlar in different peoples hand but Louis had his own thing going on.

Slap is like a persons voice. We all can speal the same language but we have different levlels of vocabulary anod we have a unique voice. Listen to MJ's get on the floor. Pure Loius Johnson. LJ's thumb is super funky. The funk is in the thumb mores than the pops.

  • LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes! Can't believe my mate found this at last! We used to play hooky from school and even wrote a whole play based on this music and used to act it out in his front room! Sad and crazy but we loved it. Wow, it still sounds amazing!

  • @isleoforkney Ofcourse i do, I just wanted to point out that mr. johnsons style is very characteristic. Just because i'm not a hardcore jazz musician doesnt say that i dont know what i'm talking about

  • @bbBassYo there are more people with this style, it's bread and butter to us hard core jazz bassists, remember Mark King of Level 42 back in the 80's?

  • @cirrusmajor It's not Louis on bass! he was playing drums on that track, he can play both! that's talent!

  • @cirrusmajor Haha yeah he's got the funk allright!
