Henry Purcell (1659-1695) Hail, bright Cecilia!
Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, Z. 328
Gabriel Consort & Players
dir. Paul McCreesh

1. "Hail, brigt Cecilia!"
Susan Hemington Jones, soprano
Timothy Wilson, countertenor
Mark le Brocq, tenor
Peter Harvey, bass

2. "Hark, hark, each tree its silence breaks"
Timothy Wilson, contertenor
Charles Pott, bass

1.
Hail! Bright Cecilia, Hail! fill ev'ry Heart!
With Love of thee and thy Celestial Art;
That thine and Musick's Sacred Love
May make the British Forest prove
As Famous as Dodona's Vocal Grove.

2.
Hark! hark! each Tree its silence breaks,
The Box and Fir to talk begin!
This is the sprightly Violin
That in the Flute distinctly speaks!
'Twas Sympathy their list'ning Brethren drew,
When to the Thracian Lyre with leafy Wings they flew.

  • happy St. Cecilia's day to you!

    Brilliant singing in this version.

    Cheers

  • @mrsneaky2010 Yes, baroque music is not regarded as seriously as romantic music. And some people (that really don't know anything about music at all) values contemporary music ( like the unintelligeble noice of my countryman Arne Nordheim) even higher. Ignorant snobs! They're just there for the drinks and the pleasant feeling of superiority.!

  • frantic and unmusical, I used to love timothy, maybe it's the conductor....??????

  • Beautiful music but a sad story.

  • @achantus1 I fully agree with you!! his music is wonderful and decades ahead of it's time...But maybe he was born in the wrong era to be recognised as an all time great..baroque music does not tend to be taken seriously enough!!!..

  • When you have heard as much of Purcells music as I have, you will begin to wonder if not Purcell was one of the greatest music talents ever. I think he was. And a bit underestimated.

  • Wonderful music, thanks.
