Protestors showed their disdain for two teachers who harassed a former student in the Anoka-Hennepin School District before the School Board meeting last night. A number of people spoke to the board commenting on the disciplinary action the district took against teachers Diane Cleveland and Walter Filson who verbally harassed a male high school student over his perceived sexual orientation during the 2007-2008 school year. The district reached a $25,000 settlement with the student and his family this summer. The teachers were not fired for their actions against the student because of continuing contract union laws that allow remediation such as sensitivity training. The Brooklyn Park City Council honored its Grand and First place winners for the Summer Blossom Garden & Landscape Recognition program at its meeting last night. Winners include Jude Jones at 6516 Ronald Place for the Grand Single Family category; Jorge Adamson at 7236 72nd Lane North for the Grand Town Home category; for the Grand Neighborhood Garden category neighbors located on Ladyslipper won including Lee & Marian Stangl, George & Gail Krasean, Marion Frohle, Ed & LaBell Zeller, Al Kowalczyk, Clarence & Mary Illies and Bonnie Oberloh; and Living Word Christian Center at 9201 75th Avenue North for the Grand Commercial.
The Jewish community will honor captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit's 23rd birthday tomorrow at the Sabes Jewish Community Center in St. Louis Park. The event will feature remarks by Congressman Keith Ellison, Congressman Erik Paulsen's office and a proclamation from Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. An Israeli singer will also perform, and a documentary about Shalit will be shown. The commemoration starts at 7 p.m.
