The final project of the course asked us to each write a pitch around one of the seven deadly sins/virtues, meet with our group to decide which pitch to choose to film, and produce a 3 and a half minute film about that theme. The theme we chose was faith, and I originally thought of the film being about "change". A main character was going to be going through a tough change and having his faith tested. The day of the shoot, we decided to change the entire film to condense it to fit the time limit, as I had written a 6 page script. This script was a lot different, and I felt the theme had changed to "Faith in Love"

The story is about Brian, a Sophomore in college who had had a relationship with a girl named a year before. In the opening scene, he introduces us his life while on the phone with his mom: snow on the ground, new job at the library; just a mundane college experience. He then mentions how he saw Autumn at work, and we flash back to him working earlier that day. The conversation between them is extremely awkward, and after she leaves, he goes to get another cup of coffee. When his worker friend mentions how he though Brian had quit, and we go into a flashback of his relationship with Autumn.

The main focus of the relationship between Brian and Autumn is about commitment, almost a mirror of the 'Tale of Two Lovers' project. At first, they are happy, its a normal relationship. After a while, Brian falls in love, and Autumn isn't ready to commitment, so she leaves him. From that experience, Brian's faith in falling in love and finding the one person right for him is lost, and he believes that he doesn't need love to be happy.

Back to the coffee shop, he mentions to his mom "I quit coffee, maybe I should quit dating too". The waitress, May, brings him his coffee in the middle of his conversation, and he says thank you. After that line, he takes a sip of coffee, and notices something written on the cup. He turns it and sees the waitresses name on it, a heart, and her phone number. This outreach of the girl giving him her phone number helps Brian regain faith in falling love again and that someone can love him.

Originally, when we changed the idea, I was very frustrated that my idea had been changed, but I learned a tough lesson that when collaborating with a group, you need to make sacrifices and keep your mind open to new possibilities. I feel like the film definitely, in the end, connected to theme. The theme is easily relatable to the audience, the idea of some point in your life where you lose sight of yourself. Sometimes, we lose faith in love and ourselves, and we spiral into a depression, thinking we will never find ourselves again. And sometimes, little gestures can make a complete change and difference.

Some cool technical notes about this film: all of the audio in the scene of the coffee shop is all dubbed in post production. We had too much noise going on in the restaurant, and we needed the song "Autumn Leaves" playing through the scene and there was music playing in the restaurant. We had our main playing Brian come in and re dub all of the dialogue, and Josh went and filmed sound of kitchen noises at one of the dining halls.
