NES Tetris - 801,222

I became obsessed with Tetris in 1990 trying to win the Nintendo World Championship (NWC). I made this video in 2004 after a month or two of attempts to beat my previous high score. I haven't played much recently, but at some point the lure of scoring 999,999 may suck me back in =)

Leinadi, interesting point - I would not be surprised if the PAL version of the game runs at a different speed. Twin Galaxies does have two categories of high score, one for PAL, and one for NTSC - so your cart may be faster!

On the level select screen, hold the A button and press start when choosing your level. This allows you to start 10 levels higher than you normally would. That is the only "trick" in this video.

Why did you upgrade at 120 lines when you were Level 18?

For some reason, that is how the game works. I guess it would make more sense if level 19 came when you hit 190 lines. But, as you can see I start at level 18, not level 0. Maybe the programmers make level 19 come at 120 lines so that it is harder to max out the score.

@Leinadi It turns out they did mess up the difficulty quite a bit when trying to adjust for the lower refresh rate of PAL TVs. (See the recent videos on my channel and t2048's compared to this one.) Although the piece movement speed is quite a bit faster, it's not enough to account for how much earlier the game hits 1G speeds. For European NES Tetris players, the game may as well end a whole 10 levels earlier.

in my version of the game (nes, germany) level 19 is WAY faster, so fast that you can't even move the brick to one of the outer sides, even if you press the arrowbutton already before the brick appears. it's about as fast as your level 22. so either you have a different version of the game, or this video is fake.

my best score is at about 600000 pts.

huh... ok level 29 is really too fast lol.. the speed of the game doesn't even allow you to move a bloc completely on the side lol.. and wow a level 28 tetris.. nice job!

I would've thought you would need 200 lines to get to level 20 though.. that's how i got there when i did 202 lines back then..

no the higher the level is, the more points a tetris gives.. this is level 18.. it's no easy stuff!
