The final of a 5 part instructional series of videos. Of particular interest to 19th Century fiddle enthusiasts, especially Civil War re-enactors. This one has some video of the completed instrument being played by a Master, Troy Parker

  • You might notice a number of posts from ijerry1. This is my friend Dr. Jerry Everard, professor, author, violin maker and prize-winning renowned fiddler in Australia. When he makes a point you should take note. Dr. Jerry's recent issue with me using a Dremel to drill string holes in pegs--He is right. I have done hundreds of pegs and am too confident. We should always drill these holes by hand...simply turn a small drill bit manually...it will go through the peg in a few minutes.

  • Great video - although I'm not sure about hand-held peg and hand-held high speed drill - looks like a recipe for a nasty accident.

  • Jerry,

Good to hear from you. Is it the Dremel for the string hole in the peg that you are referring to?

    Don

  • yes - even with the hand-awled starter hole there seems a lot of potential for slippage - I would hold that peg in a padded vice and have both hands on the dremel :-)

But I really liked the meticulous approach to bedding in the pegs - that Hills peg soap is great isn't it!

  • Jerry,

I will reply to to your excellent point in a new comment.

    Don

  • I found your video series very informative and useful for anyone wanting to to keep their pegs working nicely.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I hope you create more like this it.

Great job on the tune as well!

  • Thank you!

  • Absolutely! This is a great series, and I know that my good friend Dr Don Rickert works safely in the shop - but others may not, and as a player as well as a maker, I know that if it roars and has teeth it probably also eats meat... which would ruin your whole day! That's not a criticism of the video, I just urge people to work safely and enjoy working for a looong time :-)

Keep the vids coming Don :-)

    Cheers

    Jerry
