This was the Showstopper of the Night. Star Candice Brown is performing a Tierney Sutton-influenced arrangement of Softly As In a Morning Sunrise (1928). IS IT HOT IN HERE OR IS IT JUST CANDICE?
If you ever wondered what Candice could do if she were to LET IT ALL GO, THIS VIDEO WILL ANSWER THAT QUESTION! A MUST-SEE FOR ALL CANDICE BROWN FANS!
Sigmund Romberg wrote the music and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote the words for this composition for the musical New Moon the sinuous, strongly rhythmic melodic line resembles an Argentine tango this made the tune quite danceable in its time (ed. And hence, led to its ultimate popularity). from JazzStandards.com
Tierney Suttons influence on Candice is quite apparent. Both manifest the qualities of pitch and tone control, enunciation, clarity, and phrasing, which this Chart demands.
A minimalist Cal Poly Jazz Band, ala Tierney Sutton Band, accompanies Candice, consisting of Piano Brandon Biznessman Cordoba, Drums Jeanette Jeena E Lawler, and Bass Capn Craig Tsurumoto.
Earlier this year, The 5th Songwriter Showcase, an evening of original songs written and performed by Cal Poly Pomona students, was held on Thursday, May 14 at 8 p.m.. Ed. Note: As I was framing out the newer videos, I received an email from a famous "anonymous" - my term - who had viewed the Cal Poly Jazz Band - UNC Greeley Jazz Festival - Skylark post. She praised Candice Brown's performance by writing that it reminded her of Dinah Shore singing of that when they both were performing at West Hollywood club that week. WOW, to think that someone that noteworthy watched a video from this little Channel is, well, mind-blowing. Anyway, if you read this, take time to see the video she is commenting on. Thank you.

  • this doesn't sound like jazz, but it's a jazz song

  • Well, Tierney Sutton is VERY MUCH JAZZ, tours the World, and is an instructor at the world's prestigious Jazz University (of Southern California... like that reference?) . BUT jazz is very free-form and accommodates a lot of styles.

  • Awesome!

  • When you come to the USA, visit us in Orange County, CA. It's NOT like the Housewives of Orange County and the OC (or is it?). Of course, if you are watching quality video like this, you are not in front of a television. lol

  • Hot Jazz! what a knockout
