Passing Strange Broadway Rehearsal & Interviews

Of all the musicals hitting Broadway this season, none have stirred the excitement and curiosity of Passing Strange, which hits the Great White Way on February 8 after a four-year developmental process, including productions at Berkeley Rep and the Public Theatre. The autobiographical, semi-narrated piece tells the story of Youth (played by the electrifying Daniel Breaker) who travels from L.A. to Amsterdam, Berlin, and back home again in search of his personal and musical identity. At a recent press event, TheaterMania got a sneak preview at some of the show's musical numbers and spoke with co-creators Stew, Heidi Rodewald, and Annie Dorsen, as well as Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis, about this sure-to-be-talked-about musical.

this show really was very moving. I loved the music lights and the tone of this show. STEW YOU ARE AMAZING. make a soundtrack and don't leave one moment out!

This show just didn't get marketed properly somehow; I had heard of it, even heard a story about it on NPR or something, but the attempted descriptions never even remotely interested me. I only got turned onto it long after it closed on Broadway, through the filmed version, which thankfully had been made (by Spike Lee). This show should have been a huge hit; if we didn't at least have the video that would be a terrible, terrible shame.

WEll, now the movie is soon to be released. Add it to your collection. This play was awesome!! I saw it 3 times. Best musical I've ever seen.

Seriously, anyone who likes pop music and/or musical theater should RUN NOT WALK to see this show. The musicians seriously rock, the actors are marvelous, and Stew is The Man!
