Chiefs End Packers Perfect Season, Colts Win & Tebow Magic Over! Are The Packers Still SB Favorites?
Chiefs Defeat The Undefeated Packers 19-14
It was difficult not to watch the Green Bay Packers lose Sunday afternoon and shrug. They never made going undefeated a goal, and so their shocking loss to Kansas City perhaps said more about the Chiefs, revived under the interim coach Romeo Crennel, than it did about the Packers.
Might it have been a wake-up call for a team that had been dispatching opponents so easily with the flick of Aaron Rodgers's wrist and needed a good test before the playoffs?
Any blueprint for beating Green Bay that the Chiefs may have provided is mitigated by the fact that the Packers have been struck by injuries. The absence of receiver Greg Jennings shortened the field for the offense. Running back James Starks was hurt, too. And injuries on the offensive line — tackle Bryan Bulaga strained his knee, and his replacement, Derek Sherrod, broke his leg — exposed an already weak link. But Dilfer, who watched the game from the Denver press box before the Broncos' game against the New England Patriots, pointed to what now has to be the greatest concern for the Packers as they focus on locking up the N.F.C.'s top seed and prepare for the playoffs.
Patriots Defeat Tim Tebow & The Broncos 41-23
The AFC is all but there for the taking, only the Pittsburgh Steelers are now standing between the Patriots and the top seed in the AFC. The skeptics will remind you the Patriots were the top seed in the AFC last year. The realists will say it is time to give them their due.
Facing deficits of 6-0 and 16-7 on a day in which they also lost their best defensive player of the season, the Patriots rumbled to a 41-23 victory over the Denver Broncos yesterday at a rabid Sports Authority Stadium. Coupled with losses by both the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans, the victory moved New England thisclose to the top seed in the AFC pending the outcome of the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers tonight in San Francisco.
Oh, the Patriots are still flawed, as we all know. But give them their due.
"This was a real good win for our football team. Give the players all the credit," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after the victory. "They did a real good job [yesterday] against a good football team. We fought back and made plenty of plays to win in all three phases of the game.
Colts Win First Game Of The Season As They Defeat The Titans 27-13
Jim Caldwell had the same serious, intense look he always brings to Monday's news conference.
He just sounded different.
Less than 24 hours after eliminating the possibility of a winless season, Caldwell took a deep breath and sounded relieved that the Colts could finally focus on something else.
The Colts (1-13) will take anything after this miserable season.
Peyton Manning hasn't played a down for the first time in his career and won't play in the final two games, either. Team vice chairman Bill Polian made that clear after Sunday's 27-13 victory over Tennessee.
The loss of defensive captains Gary Brackett and Melvin Bullitt, to season-ending rotator cuff injuries in the first two weeks, left a huge void.
Coaches have had to constantly shuffle the offensive line and secondary, creating more holes, and it took 14 games and three different quarterbacks before the Colts posted their first win without Manning in 14 years. The last quarterback not named Manning to win in a Colts jersey was Jim Harbaugh.
Indy went 50 weeks between victories, losing 14 straight including last January's loss to the Jets. Worse, they didn't even have a lead for more than 500 minutes of game action this season, finally ending that when Adam VInatieri ended the first quarter Sunday with a 47-yard field goal to give the Colts a 3-0 advantage.
But winning just one isn't good enough for a team that posted an NFL-record 115 regular-season victories over the last decade.
