I cant see a better way to make a motor than use very strong magnets and a hand full of James Roney stator shields. Not to mention coupling them up to an oscilating pendulum...
Am I wrong?

CoP is Coefficient of Performance - Work or energy in divided by work or energy out. Commonly used term in refrigerators and aircon. Work in for magnet motors is zero. 5% in a more practical device is better.
