The title is taken from James Delgado's book on the subject. After the defeat of his fleet in Japan by a divine wind (Kamikazee), Khublai Khan turns his attention to the Dai Viet in Vietnam in 1284. Pushing into north Vietnam, the Chinese and Mongols endure disease, hunger and ambush from the Vietnamese who had retreated into the jungle. Khans fleet eventually retreats to the Bach Dang river, where they pursue a small flotilla of Vietnamese boats to the mouth of the river. When the tide drops, Khans fleet is trapped on rocks and metal tipped stakes that were driven into the mud. Burning rafts crash into them, as they are bombarded with arrows.
