Uploaded by http://aftersabbath.blogspot.com the blog for 60s-70s heavy obscurities.

Pan's sole album release is an impressive early piece of heavy progressive rock with a touch of blues/hard rock and folk influences at its finest. The tone of the album manages to contrast both the heavy with the melancholy perfectly. Emotional vocals by Robert Lelièvre (who also wrote all the songs, except "If") lend the tunes a somewhat dark, moody feel. His distinctive vocals (sung mostly in English, with two songs sung in his native French) range from the angry and frustrated to yearnful and contemplative. Thomas Puggard-Müller's spiritual guitar work plays between both the powerful and the subtle, and is occasionally somewhat reminiscent of David Gilmour. The acoustic guitar-dominated sections provide folk flair and just for variety, some jazzy moments in which a vibraphone is heard, add yet another level to the already impressive variety of styles on display. There are great emotive splashes of organ/piano by Henning Werner, and throbbing proficient bass from Arne Würgler. Michael Puggaard-Müller's skilful yet unobtrusive drumming drives along all ten songs, and it's all over in just less than 40 minutes -- the way all great albums should be.

Though, it's not a perfect album... in fact, the album would have benefited with the exclusion of "My Time" and "Many Songs Have Been Lost". Like a lot of early 70's albums from back in the day, both these songs don't seem to fit with the flow of the rest of album, and simply jar with the mood the rest of the songs create. As they are both relatively short tracks, it is easy to overlook this lack of focus from Robert and the band as the other songs more than make up for it. In 1993, Little Wing re-issued PAN on vinyl, limited to only 1000 copies. The reissue contained two bonus tracks, "In A Simple Way" and "Ride Across My Bed", which as it happens were the A-side and B-Side on Pan's only ever 7" single release. In 2005, Karma Music also reissued the album on CD, this time with extensive liner notes (written by Claus Rasmussen in Danish), unpublished photos, and the following seven exclusive bonus tracks (including the groups earlier 1970 Single and B-side release) added: "In A Simple Way", "Right Across My Bed", "To Get Along Alone (alternate studio take)", "Eternally", "Such A Hard Way", "Tristesse (mon ami)" and "Don't You Know". These last four tracks (plus the unreleased, "For Me To Cry Is Just Another Way To Say Goodbye" and "Don't You Know (aka Remember)") were recorded as a live radio session in 1971 for Radiobeat, during the era as the group were working on a follow-up album which unfortunately never eventuated.
