Portugal: Moving Towards Sustainable Waste Management.
In 10 years, Portugal closed down about 300 dumps managed by 250 institutions. Today, there are 29 waste management systems with adequate infrastructure for recovery and disposal. Emphasis is on the implementation of separate collections systems with the priority being prevention and recycling.
Some of the examples shared in this video include:
-Modernizing waste management infrastructures with the systems closer to production sites
-Indicators for monitoring
-Involvement of stakeholders and citizens
-Attaching economic value to waste
-Recycling materials
-Fertilizers for compost
-Waste to production of alternative fuel
-Promotion of digital information and electronic billing.
The Ministry of Environment in Portugal shared with the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development (DSD) a video highlighting their progress in implementing Agenda item Waste Management of the eighteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18 http://bit.ly/9jMuEw).
