Chapter 26 - My Beautiful Rescue - A Jonas Brothers Story

AHHH I apologize for the extremely, extremely long wait. School has just been crazy lately. I am going to try my hardest to get chapter 27 out this weekend too to make up for the almost 3 weeks without an update. Thanks for being patient & I really appreciate all the feedback!

(Brooke's Point of View)

I sat on the edge of my bed alone, playing with a delicate necklace in my hands, tossing it from one palm to the other.

A few days had passed since I found out that my grandmother had suffered a heart attack and today was the day she was going to be receiving open heart surgery. It was a very risky procedure and there was only a 50% chance that she would survive. I was nervous for her and just wanted it to be over with, but I had hope that she would make it through.

The necklace that I was now looking at was her gift to me. When I had visited her in the hospital hours before her surgery, she had unclasped it from around her own neck and placed it in my hands.

"I love you," she had whispered in my ear before kissing me on the top of my head.

My eyes were now welling up with tears at the thought of her not being able to pull through from the operation. At that moment, she was most likely just going in to begin the procedure, which would last several hours. The negative thoughts would not escape my mind, even if I tried to occupy myself with other activities.

I listened to the Jonas Brothers, I listened to "A Little Bit Longer" in particular, but for once their music did not comfort me. I just could not stop worrying. I thought about Kevin, his smile, his laughter. Kayla had texted me a couple of days ago informing me that he and Rachel had broken up. It had cheered me up, but only temporarily.

I decided the best thing to do would to just fall asleep. I fastened my grandma's necklace on myself, hoping that it would bring good luck, and gradually drifted off into a short nap.

I was mid-dream when I realized that someone was whispering my name right above me. Slowly, I opened my eyes, squinting in an attempt to adjust to the light.

"Brooke... Kayla is on the phone, wake up," my mom murmured firmly.

I groaned. "Can't she just call back later?" It's not that I didn't want to talk to her, just not when I had just woken up.

My mom nodded and walked out of my room and into the hallway, as I heard her speak into the phone. I rolled over on my side and brought a blanket up over my head.

A few seconds later, and I heard my door opening again. "She says it's important."

By now, I was fully awake, so I jumped out of my bed and grabbed the phone from my mom's hands as she left.

"Hello?" I spoke groggily.

"Hey, um, I have someone on the phone who wants to talk to you," she said too quickly for me to even comprehend. "So, uh yeah, bye!"

"Kayla?" I asked, confused.

"Hey!" The response startled me. It was a deep voice - definitely not Kayla. Wait...

"Kevin?"

"Yeah, hey Brooke!" his voice softened. "I just wanted to know how you are doing. So, how are you?" I assumed he had found out that my grandma was in the hospital from either Kayla or Lindsey.

"I'm doing better... my grandma is probably in getting her surgery done right now."

He must've sensed the uneasiness in my voice. "Don't worry too much about it. My grandpa had a heart attack a few years ago, too, and had to get surgery. But everything turned out fine. I'm sure your grandma will recover perfectly," He paused. "But I'm glad you are doing better. We've all been praying for you and your family."

"Thanks so much, Kevin," I smiled, my cheeks heating up.

"Anytime. I totally understand what you're going through right now." I thanked him once again. "So! I was wondering, if you're up for it, do you want to go to Starbucks one day soon? You know, just to get your mind off things. We're going to be in your area all week."

I stammered, before finally responding. "Yeah! Sounds great!"

"How about... well tomorrow is Thursday. Does Saturday sound good? 3 o'clock?"

"Perfect!" I answered, not even knowing if I had anything planned for Saturday. But it didn't matter. I would cancel anything to see Kevin Jonas.
