Kalamazoo Deputy shot by Driver Jan 2012

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Dash cam shows a Kalamazoo deputy engage in what the sheriff called the "fight of his life" after being shot in the arm during a traffic stop.

William Wright, 28, launched what would become a seven-hour ordeal for police when he fired the first shots Friday night, according to WOOD TV, as Deputy Jeff Nichols and Reserve Deputy Jeremy Conley approached his vehicle for a traffic stop. Immediately dodging bullets — and taking one hit to the arm — Nichols returned fire as the vehicle fled, authorities said. Conley also returned fire, but is not seen on video.

  • I agree with 400lb! Seriously...

  • @jwmatt ya too bad the deputy missed and too bad it wasn't you in the pickup.

  • Too bad the driver of the pick-up missed.

  • Lax attitude is what will get you killed out there. Officer did lots of things right and only a few things wrong. But all it takes is that lax attitude and one wrong move and you end up shot or worse.

  • Did that cop have any training? The cop is doing 81mph on Michigan avenue without his hazard lights on, the truck was never put into park, the engine was not turned off, he blocked his spotlight with his own body and then he shot wildly at a moving target when another non related vehicle was right next to it. And why did he pull the guy over anyways?

  • for all officers out there the officer silhouetted himself and lost most of his spotlight effectiveness be aware of this while approaching a vehicle...

  • One big tip off was the fact that the suspect driver continued to step on his brakes. You can see his brake lights on the whole time right up until the point where he begins to shoot at the officer. Which probably also means he never shut off his car engine either. So he had this planned the whole time. I guess thats why its so important to have them shut off there engines even on a so called routine t/stop without being in a hurry. Just an observation.
