Hidden Horror: disgusting, broken sewage pipes

Crumbling infrastructure is one of the 3 big causes of sewage discharges, the others being purposeful dumping of sewage and so-called "urban runoff" of oil and other debris into the rivers and Ocean.

In most cases, the underground sewage pipes were only designed for 50 years of service; now, much of this "infrastructure" is far beyond its useful life, and there are many holes in the pipes leaking sewage into the ground surrounding the pipes.

One feckless staff member in OC claimed "gee, it does no harm leaking into the ground", about the 20,000 gallons disappearing each day. One council member sarcastically replied, "well, in that case, why have pipes at all??".

Obviously, sewage leaking from the superannuated, crumbling pipes can present a public health hazard.

At the recent National Governors Association meeting, President Bush told the association there was'nt going to be any additional funding to fix our nations crumbling infrastructure.

Apparently, Bush feels that spending money on a war without end will provide a better return on our investment.
