Often, the author of the passage of the particular opinion or feeling regarding the passage's main idea. THis is the author's tone or the tone of the passage. The author's attitude is often related to the author's purpose. For example, an author whose purpose is to criticize an idea might have a critical or skeptical attitude. An author whose purpose is to describe a successful theory, might have a positive or cautiously optimistic attitude. An author whose purpose is to criticize a group of people might have an ironic or disparaging attitude. An author whose purpose is to provide an analysis might have a neutral or analytical attitude. Often, the words the author uses can help us identify the tone. These two sentences are only different because of the word "slight" or "scrawny." "The slight young man" has a neutral tone. "The scrawny young man" denotes a negative tone.
