little bit of useless trivia, but in Irish Gaelic, barn owls are called scréachán reilige, which translates as graveyard screecher. Listening to that you can see why

At the very beginning I also hear an extremely soft barred owl hoot.

Barn owls are supposedly the culprits behind many of the ghost stories. Mainly due to their faces, the bobbing, and the stomping. And, especially, that blood-curdling screech!

Barn Owls don't hoot ?

lol, I told my sister I always hear a mysterious screech at night when she's asleep and she doesn't want the door closed (Although I didn't know what it was myself!)

Owls like to hang out in the tree directly outside my bedroom window and this scared the shit out of me when I heard this...

Ive heard something similar in a friends barn. There was a bunch of scratching noises like walking around. Then all of a sudden the sound of breathing came up. It sounded like a big animal though and the sound wasn't much of a screech. I was with a bunch of buds when it happened and we all heard it! Nothing like a tree could have made a sound like that. Any ideas what it was?
I hate to correct you, but it IS a barn owl that's making that terrible screech. The classic barred owl hoot is the "who cooks for you" hoot.
Admittedly, baby barred owls begging for food can sound a little like a barn owl, but that's not the case here.
There were some barred owls in the area when this was taken so you may hear some of them, but the big, loud screech is definitely a barn owl (as well as some baby barn owls, they lived in a big dead tree, we've seen them).
