A promotional video for the 2003 ECHO Festival on Big War Island in Belgrade, Serbia.

"Mired in what, from the outside, looked like true Balkan chaos," wrote a visiting BBC reporter, "the festival always looked as if it was on the brink of falling apart."

TRANSCRIPT:

Reggae started out as rebel music, the voice of former slaves creating a new identity for themselves and celebrating their roots.

A new optimism and pride took hold of the people of Jamaica after the British Empire granted them independence in 1962. This found its expression through music.

A new, distinctively Jamaican sound emerged from a fusion of folk and American rhythm and blues. The rhythm was its defining feature, but the message was just as important.

Reggae revolves around the recognition that everything in the world comes from the same source and has a natural harmony.

The philosophy of one love has another dimension. Politics divides people but music unites them, as Bob Marley proved better than anyone else. He even persuaded the political rivals who were undermining Jamaica to shake hands onstage.

Rastafarian culture has drawn ideas and rituals from religions around the world, rooting Eastern beliefs in the Western hemisphere.

Rastas eat a strict diet that is practically macrobiotic and their religion has a strong attachment to nature and a holistic respect for the environment.

Reggae stars are messengers who aim to uplift their audiences by educating them about Rastafarian roots and culture and the positive power in everyone.

Belgrade will be treated to a concert by the greatest living reggae artist, Burning Spear, who is a defiant freedom fighter after performing for 30 years.

Spiritual strength is very important to rastas and smoking ganja helps them to relax, reflect and refresh their energy.

The power of reggae comes out most strongly in dub, which strips out vocals and replaces them with heavy drum and bass.

Over four decades, Jah Shaka has become a dub legend. His sound system has the heaviest bass and a unique mystical message. Come to the ECHO festival to hear what he has to tell you.
