Palm oil, used to produce biofuel, is being billed as a sustainable solution to the world's energy problems. According to an EU directive, by 2030 all petrol must contain at least 20% biofuel. But does palm oil deserve its 'green' reputation? What are the human and environmental costs of the explosion in palm oil plantations? This week's documentary investigates how palm oil cultivation is contributing to global warming. It reveals how indigenous tribes are being forced from their land, rivers and water supplies polluted and rainforests destroyed by a rapacious palm oil industry.

I used 'they' and 'the farmer' as the same. Although 'the farmer' is probably not a good choice of words because the people who order the clearing of the land are generally rich businessmen types, while the farmers are the poor people who then work the land and rescue their families out of poverty earning enough money to be able to send their children to school. My point is that people are doing this, not oil palm. The need for vegetable oil is going to increase as the global population does.

NOT the overwhelming majority of the people living in these countries. these companies are often foreign and even when they are domestic are run by a mega-multi-rich guy like omar bakri who is hardly some old-mcdonald farmer guy (look him up- allegations of fraud and corruption abound). the people who suffer from plantation expansion usually have no say at all. nobody's blaming
