There are times when it's necessary to lip-synch. You need to understand the difficulty in running a television event with truly live bands: instruments need to be set up on stage and then the sound levels need to be set for the show. It can take many hours. Most of the audience were watching the event on television. It is much easier to set up multiple performing groups to lip-synch than it is to set up a truly live performance. I see nothing wrong with this.
I remember the Montreux Rock Festivals. They didn't last long. It wasn't really a true festival since the artists lipsynched. They were in syndication here for a few years, and MTV had the rights to the 1988 festival, which I think was the last one since I didn't hear of it after that year.
