I used to have a girlfriend with dirty blond hair but her armpit hair and her other body hair was almost jet black, which means that was her base color. I think you should try growing it out again. My ex g/f had the same complaint that you do but after about 5-6 weeks it got long enough to were it layed down nicely under each of her arms and didn't hurt anymore. Congratulations too for being a supporter of female underarm hair, wish there were more girls who felt this way.

It only hurts because you are caught in the "stubble spiral"
I 100 percent guarantee it will not hurt whatsoever in 6 months!

It's the same as with growing a beard as a man initially after pubescence:
first few times it's itchy, as long as it's still very short stubble.

When pit hair (or any other body hair) grows out initially after shaving, you're almost guaranteed for it to be 'prickly' until the 'old' hair sheds off.
