Lots to show off today. We now has a completed design document, the game is up and running on the Xbox 360, and the game's name is revealed! We'll also take a look at Sprite Buddy and how it's used in conjunction with the engine.

  • Nice work. I really like the Gameboy style.

Just out of interest, is there a way to get the screen resolution programmatically? It might be an option to scale the viewport to within the title-safe area to reduce the amount of lost visibility.

  • @RossKilgariff Unfortunately, no. There's no feedback from the TV to the Xbox that indicates the title safe area. I looked at older games to see how it was handled. Many 8-bit games had a black border surrounding the area of play, acting as a buffer. 3D games of today aren't as concerned about title safe area, as long as the HUD is visible. And occasionally I'll see a TV station that's logo is cut off at the bottom, meaning they messed up as well. :)

  • @trufun202 That's a pain. Some people will have a gameplay advantage as they can see further into the distance (much like the fog used in first-person shooters to ease rendering requirements). Thanks for the info.

  • @RossKilgariff True, and comparing it to fog is an interesting way to put it. But, we're hoping to mitigate any unfair advantages/disadvantages through careful level design. It will definitely be a challenge.

  • wow this looks awesome on the 360 cant wait for next vid.

ps. mabye allow for use of the editor with the game, i think that would give it more value than it already has

  • @SolLuxx I've definitely given that some thought. Allowing people to make their own levels would be huge. Imagine if Angry Birds had a built-in level editor! For now, we're just focusing on the game, but we'll see. ;)

  • Awesome stuff.

I'm thinking about starting work on my own XNA platformer very soon. I just have to figure out how I'm going to lay out the data structures for my tile map.

  • Nice !

RadRaygun, has a ring to it :)
