Dr. Renu Khator, the Chancellor of the University of Houston system addressed a distinguished audience at the Gulen Institute on March 26, 2009, as a part of the Institutes ongoing luncheon series. Focusing on the topic, The Future of Education and Value of Higher Education in America, Dr. Khatur discussed, in general, what U.S. colleges and universities need to do to remain competitive in a global educational market, and in particular, what steps UH should take to achieve Tier-1 university status. She presented statistics comparing other countries citizens financial investment in college education with that of U.S. citizens and discussed a new legislative proposal to keep college tuition costs in Texas low. Dr. Khatur stated that her main goals at UH are to increase the number of high quality research professors, particularly in the fields of energy and holistic medicine, and to improve and expand the science, engineering, and performing arts programs.
