The complete, rather long title of this gospel song is
"Woke Up This Morning With My Mind On Jezus"
I learned it from Mississippi Fred McDowell's cd "First Recordings" (1959), still available on the Rounder label.
The song is a real gem, simple yet mesmerising. I'm surprised Fred McDowell recorded it only once, the day of his discovery.

I'm in open D and playing an old Stella.

You'll find this song also on my cd, available at

  • Top Shelf. Great cover. Hey, can't get Needin' Time out of my head. I listened to your CD over and over on a two hour car trip. Listen to it again on the way back home. Certainly, anybody who is a fan of your videos would enjoy listening to your CD. Real nice work.

  • Thanks Keni, quite an honour coming from a seasoned bluesman like you!

  • guess you don't play no rock and roll:) thats higher action than the 4mm right>

  • yep, this guitar is only good for slide.

  • Great job!

  • I like it!!

  • Love the way the guitar sings with you on this one, that is what I love most about Mississippi Fred, that he doesn't even need to finish singing a verse because his guitar will literally enunciate and pronounce the words that he doesn't sing. Nice work for sure

  • Great !!!!

    Thanks from Germany

Ha det bra fra Norge !!

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!

  • WOW!!! Sound's just like Fred! I'm a fan.

  • hal brolund is still the best blues player in the world.

  • INSCRIPTION ON A BLUESMAN S TOMBSTONE - Didn t wake up this morning

  • Oh, wow! This is exquisite. Fred McDowell is so under-appreciated -- and this was one of his best. When i saw the title, i thought you'd be doing the Roosevelt Graves and Brother version, but this is more rich (and you don't need a tambourine player). Thanks. Sweet guitar, too, by the way.

  • Yet another great cover by you. Honest 100% truth i think you are the best blues man on youtube. If i can play just a 1/4th as good as you i would be very pleased with myself. You ever gone busking before? (you would be able to retire from work after a few days imo) lol
