It's one of the most popular, organised and contentious social movements in Latin America today, but you may never have heard of it. Movimento Sem Terra, or MST means movement of the landless. Hundreds of thousands of Brazil's poorest people have joined to squat unused land right across the country. Every step is fraught with danger as they face the guns of powerful landowners. What they're fighting for goes to the heart of politics and power in Brazil- LAND.
From shantytowns to settlements: Taking Back the Land introduces Brazil's famous landless people movement.
Presented by Nina Simoes. Originally made for Channel 4's ALT-TV strand.

The MST is just a bunch of poor, armed, politically motivated anarchists. You cannot take by force what generations worked to conquer. My ancestors came in 1854 and we are a sucession of 6 generations working from 8am to 8pm. Don't tell me you were born 22 years ago and want some land for free. They should be looking for jobs, like all other serious people in Brazil.
That is it! Congratulations to your family. People like you built the new world and made it develop. The MST want to become for free the results of the work of people like your family.
SO you think that if a person does not have a car, he should go and make a road block, steal a car from someone that has two cars in the garage? So you think a guy that works for someone and does not have a factory should go and invade a factory from a company that has two industrial plants? What a machiavelic mind! Lol!
"bourgeoisie" are so brainwashed. Don't they know the government wants to gain control so they can get rid of them. And dumb them down with GMO crops. This is already taking place in America. They're not even required to label foods which are not result of traditionally understood evolution, but experimentation. Chemicals and pesticides with hundred of "inert" ingredients with effects unknown! Furthermore they are reducing diversity. Nature's Law will destroy a monoculture
The problem is that large landowners hold deeds from previous eras of colonialism. Lands that were gained by force. And many intentionally aged, forged deeds, which split up land, that was acquired by conquest, not by fair trade. If you own stolen property then you really have no right to it anyway. Furthermore, I understand there are already land-reform measures which attempt to expropriate land, but they are not working, how to determine which land is 'idle"
has anyone read Hope's Edge : The Next Diet for a Small Planet. Frances Moore Lappe spent some time with the MST. They have self-sufficient communes they educate the people. If you let government's plans take their course, no one will know how to work the land! Then how will you eat, when some virus destroys massive undiverse fields of GMO's? Not to mention unsustainable farming practices further petrol dependence, either way, it will be harder and harder to pay
you want everyone to live separate from the Earth for which we are created??!? These people want to work the land. And there are lands which are unused. There are also lands used for wasteful purpose that does not serve humanity. Overgrazing will create vast deserts, coffee farmers can't live off of that, if they can't get paid enough due to trade cartels. This situation is happening all over the world. I do my part and try not to use products promoted by the exploiters as healthful
Where land is really unused the MST does not want to go! And do you know why? Because the MST wants to keep close to asphalted roads and cities. Analyse where most of the MST "assentamentos" are located at! Besides, they do not know how to manage a farm and even if they would know they have no money to invest in the land they become. So, after becoming land, they want money and if they do not get money they invade other farms in order to protest and keep in the media!
