The lamasery of the hidden paradise Shangri-La as written by James Hilton in LOST HORIZON. In paradise they teach that virtue lies in avoiding excess. The extravagant 1973 film was produced by Ross Hunter with a score by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.   • nice snippets of philosophy! one of my all-time favorite movies. Thanks for posting. (please adjust text, I think it should be, " you are in the MIDST of life" (not "mist') though I may be mistaken, of course...

  • ouch! I'm corrected. One of those incidences/edits that slipped by without notice.  "MIDST" . . . definitely, "In the midst of life". Okay, I got it.

  • you know I got to see this movie again. Its been forever since last I seen it, perhaps I will get a better feeling this time, not that I had a bad feeling the first time I saw it. Just say.

  • Of couse...I had quite forgotten that Gielgud was Tibetan. I saw this film as a child, through uncynical eyes and loved it. Later, as an adult, I realised it had shortcomings compared to the 1937 version, but the songs still stand up. I think there is scope for a stage version :-)
