Business Rules and BDM 101: Incorporating Business Rules and Decisions Into BPM, BDM and SOA

Course Description:

This intensive business rule tutorial is specifically targeted at both non-technical and technical audiences and is excellent for entire project teams. Attendees may be those involved in purely business-oriented business rule projects or projects targeted for system development. Aimed at project managers and key project people, this tutorial is the fastest and simplest way to get started on a business rules project, following KPIs acclaimed STEP approach to business rules. It is the only business rules course supported by a step-by-step reference book and based on the industry standard KPI Rule Maturity Model (RMM). The course introduces the discipline of Business Decision Management where business rules are managed in the context of Business Process Management. This tutorial introduces the attendee to motivations for BDM projects, relationship between BPM/BDM, and the various levels of Business Rule maturity, so as to determine the appropriate approach for a specific project. It starts with what is possible on a first-time business rule project and leads to discussion of some of the most mature business rule and BDM success stories.

The tutorial focuses mostly on selecting a BDM project, determining the BDM benefits and metrics, followed by scoping and planning it. It then proceeds to an overview of the six steps of the KPI STEP approach, with insights into enhanced techniques and deliverables that have evolved since publication of the book, Business Rules Applied (von Halle, Barbara, 2002: John Wiley & Sons) including the incorporation of BDM to BPMN and Use Cases. Workshops lead the attendee through scoping a BDM project, role descriptions, and linking business rules to process or use case deliverables. Workshop solutions are illustrated using MS/Excel ™ templates, along with a preview of the solutions in a source rule repository (KPIs STEP Workbench).
