Tom Ridge on John McCain
Hardball with Chris Matthews 05:07pm
Interview
TRANSCRIPT:
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Do you believe sir, Senator Ridge, that Barack Obama is a Socialist, and I mean in the term we grew up with what it means, it means the government runs the economy, do you think he is one of those guys?
TOM RIDGE: Well I think hes going down that path, I think, listen, I think if you have a voting record that is more liberal than the only self proclaimed socialist in the US Senate, thats Bernie Sanders, its a suggestion that if your Vice President thinks that paying taxes is patriotic when you as a presidential candidate had never voted against a tax increase and you couple that with the speaker of the house and the majority leader that all raise more taxes than you get a government with more taxes and one could say that you are going down that path.
MATTHEWS: Do you think its useful to call a person on the other side a word that most Americans hold in disrepute. Do you believe he is an enemy of free enterprise, do you think he is a man that believes in state control of the economy, thats what a socialist is. DO you believe he is such a person or not?
RIDGE: I believe he is moving down that path.
MATTHEWS: Thats not what your candidate is saying. Your candidates are saying he is a socialist.
RIDGE: Well I think you can derive from some of the comments hes made with regards to taxes, with regards to small businesses, with regards to sharing the wealth, redistributing the wealth, and he is the first presidential candidate I think, that has made a statement that limits the financial and personal asperations of people, if you earn more than 250,000 dollars we are going to tax you on more.
MATTHEWS: But Governor weve had a progressive tax system since the 1910s which means you pay according to your ability, its a progressive tax system, we dont have a straight 10%, obviously people in the higher brackets pay a lot more percentage than people in the lower brackets on the theory that they can live well and still pay higher taxes.
RIDGE: and thats the basis of the progressive tax system and there is something wrong with that system.
MATTHEWS: Is your party now saying there is something wrong with that? That somebody who makes $250,000 should pay a higher rate than someone making $25,000 a year?
RIDGE: They are already paying higher rates.
MATTHEWS: Is there something wrong with that?
RIDGE: No.
