journalists in the region are being urged to censor their own work, out of fear of arrest.
The suggestion follows legal action taken against two journalists last week for covering stories such as the crime network Ergenekon, and plots to kill non-Muslims in the country.
Star daily columnist Samil Tayyar, among the dozens of journalists covering the Ergenekon case, received a 20-month suspended prison sentence last Thursday for writing a book on the issue.
And on the same day Tayyar received his sentence, Mehmet Baransu, a reporter for the Taraf daily, was charged with violating the confidentiality of an ongoing judicial process.
He was later released by the court.
And Tayyar and Baransu are not the only journalists facing charges for covering stories like Ergenekon.
Justice Ministry data show around three-thousand journalists face similar charges.
Press organizations and journalists say there should be no obstacle to freedom of the press in Turkiye, and that resolutions of the European Court of Human Rights should be adopted.
