Andy, Akiva and Jorma made vids on youtube and channel101 for years before SNL and built a huge fanbase.
Then they all auditioned for Saturday Night Live and got it. Based on their performances but largely due to the video-work like this.

they also wrote for the mtv movie awards when jimmy fallon was hosting and jimmy was so impressed (he still worked on snl at this time) that he introduced tli to lorne michaels.
