The 2D representation of the #ubuntu IRC channel on irc.freenode.net.

The distance between nodes represents relationship strength and the thickness of the line also represents this. Temporal decay was set to 0.01 so that old relationships fade away.

The frames were generated using PieSpy.

Approximately 1 second of video represents 8 minutes of realtime.

  • 1 would equate to 100% the conversations would never decay. Think of the temporal decay as a percentage return of the links between each stage if it's less than 1 then the percentage is less than 100% so only that percentage would be returned to the next stage.

  • If that's true... only 2% is normally getting returned? That's very low; it seems odd since the graphs don't normally decay *that* rapidly. And at t.d. = 0, they still have continuity.

It'd be nice if it came with better documentation about the config variables. Obfuscated variables much? :-|

  • Well i could very well be wrong. I haven't actually messed with it since i posted this video. I don't really have a use for it i just thought it was interesting and gave it a whirl.

If not what i said then maybe the percentage is how much it decays each frame?

  • Do you know how to turn off the decay totally? I set temporaldecay=0 and it still has decay. :( I just want to use it for long-term visualization.

  • I think that it's a percentage, you'll want to set it to 1 to disable it. But i'm not sure. Restarting it in between sessions is necessary for the change to take effect, but you probably already knew that.

  • Bacteria? :)

  • Why is it *off* when set to 1? That's kinda odd...

  • It's just a series of png images. All i had to do was load the series into virtualdub and save it as an avi

  • hello, how did you bind all the images from piespy in a video ? Nice vid though :)

  • Nope, this is a representation of the public channel.

The method of discovering conversations is if another person's name is mentioned in the line, that signifies a relationship. Messages sent after the initial name in a given amount of time is considered part of the converstation.
