I agree this looks bad, but in fact it wasn't.
A motor burns when he is either overloaded (for quite a period) or is blocked in rotation (which is far worse).
The latter is not the case and the overload lasted only for 15 seconds. I can assure you that both motors are doing well. This test has been executed 2 years ago and I have no intention to repeat this.... :-)

This is not the way I operate my trains all day long but just a singulary spontanous fun action.
The material is very sturdy and reliable anyway. So burnt motors are not my fear.

That is because the PF XL motor is stronger than other dedicated train motors.

Not exactely....
Trains need not only motor power (or torque) but they have the problem to bring the power to the track.
Weight is helpful mostly.
And at a toy train the wheel rubber rings are crucial to avoid slippage.
Emerald has a high weight and optimized silicon rubber rings.
