Today we will talk about the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. On August 21, 1968, the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies invaded the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in order to change the political course of the country. As a result of the intervention the policies of liberalisation, known as the Prague Spring, was brought to a halt. The international prestige of the Soviet Union in its turn was dealt a severe blow.

  • I hate all comunist, all Russians for this war action. They destroyed freedom, which our nation got during Prague spring after 20 years of comunist reign. Them army anexed independent full-value state, which have not been for anytime Russia od Soviet territory. I have for all comunists and Russians only one word (typical russian word)-SVOLOC!

  • USSR inspired democratization process?WTF? Czechoslovakia was fully democratic since its creation in 1918. But it was taken over by Nazis in WW2 and then by Soviets in USSR-backed coup d'etat in 1948. Those were bad times. When CS tried to start the democratization again, Kremlin was afraid of losing its colony,so they used force, as they did always before, like in Hungary in 1956. It didn't happen by chance - whole warszaw pact was a dictatorship, no respect for freedom. So what's he telling us?

  • The basic word for all these discussions - I HATE!. Dont you think we are doomed for new war?

  • @Nippon131 keep in mind that there were a lot of Russians who hated that regime as much as anyone. They ended up in Siberia. Dictarorships are always minority games which is why they always fail the only question is when and how

  • @ramberghini It is interesting. that people who support communism in the West are mostly naive idealists (V. I. Ulyanov - Lenin called them useful idiots) while only infamous cynic may support communism in the past-communist countries. It is determined by experience (and experience isn't fully transmittable). We can only to try understand each other but I can't agree with you.

  • "However, capitalism is no better than Stalinism, and in fact, they are technically the same thing."

Except there nothing like. For a start Capitalism is an economic theory enitrely opposed to Socialism which Communism (Stalinism included) is based around.

"“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” Churchill

  • Typicial Russian liar.

  • it can work. Capitalism shouldn't have worked, according to how people really are, but hey, look i t has, communism has just been tried out in the wrong places, so you can't say it hasn't worked.

  • Well, it was really shown that communism doesn't work under any conditions. I don't really care about it great ideas, etc. But this idealism has always been and will always be used to mask dictatorship.

  • I support Communism (I'm no Leninist or Stalinist), but I have to say fuck you to the Soviet Union for this cruel act of imperialism. The USSR was a crude parody of communism, and to call it such fouls the reputation of many great communist leaders and believers. Communism and Stalinism are two wholly different ideologies. Stalin was hardly even a socialist at that.

  • You mean Stalinists. Communists, especially Marxist, Luxemburgists and Trotskyist hate totalitarian states such as the ones of Mao and Stalin. I am opposed to the Soviet Union, as it was an oppressive and unjust. I support the actions taken during the Prague Spring, as it was an escape from Soviet oppression. However, capitalism is no better than Stalinism, and in fact, they are technically the same thing.
