Vanni-Marcoux DON QUICHOTTE (Massenet): Mort de Don Quichotte: Ecoute, mon ami, with Odette Ricquier and Michel Cazetta, orchestra conducted by Piero Coppola [HMV DA 4857, recorded 1934] Vanni-Marcoux was renowned for his interpretation of Don Quichotte. Jean-Émile Diogène Marcoux (June 12, 1877, Turin October 22, 1962, Paris) was a French operatic bass-baritone, known professionally as Vanni Marcoux (sometimes hyphenated as Vanni-Marcoux). He was particularly associated with the French and Italian repertories. His huge repertoire included an estimated 240 roles and he won renown as one of the most memorable singing-actors of the 20th century.

  • This has an excellent feel for Don Quichotte, considering it is a recording from 1934. Thank you for posting.

  • What a master of the dramatic effect of understated singing. Thank you, opertutto.

  • It's been a very long time since I last listened to Vanni-Marcoux. Thank you, George, for re-acquainting me with this great, great singer!

  • This is a very moving--and understated-- rendition of the death of D. Quixote. Very, very nice indeed! It is sort of the opposite extreme of what Chaliapin did. Thank you so much for posting!
