@BasilFawlty4444 I do think that the men of the Merchant Navy always get left out when it comes to credit.Lets face it, neither the Russians or the RAF would have been able to do much without the MN
Darien and Basil, Both photographs are iconic of the theatre they represent. It is not generaly known but both shots are recreations of the events they portray and taken days after they actually happened.
@TheDARIEN54321 Well the defeat of Japan, from the point of view of the British at least, is not anywhere near as important as the downfall of Hitler.
I know that the war in the Pacific is very big to America because it's what dragged them into the war, and in effect, it's what made them a superpower to replace Britain.
But to us, the war in Europe - which changed the entire worldview of the British - is of far more profound importance.
@BasilFawlty4444 Hmm. I can say I have been studying WWII for a very long time, and not only from my country's point of view, and I have to say i have only seen that image once or twice.
@BasilFawlty4444 Okay, we have different opinions. My opinion is that our marines were the main heroes because they lost thousands apon thousands of men island hopping to Japan. That, and the picture of them on top of Mt. Sarabachu is probably the most iconic image of the war.
@BasilFawlty4444 I didn't say they didn't have the ability, I'm just pulling stuff from WWII. They were the main heroes of the troops in WWII. The thing is, we are both allies fighting a war together, and we both get stuff done.
@TheDARIEN54321 Surely the SAS and Royal Marines also have the ability to succeed in their missions?
Sure, the marines are an iconic image, but so are the SAS. Their image (with the American marines) resounds in modern culture - never played Modern Warfare?

Isn't the photo of the Red Army raising their flag over the Reichstag the most iconic image of the war?

@TheDARIEN54321 I think the RAF in the summer of 1940 are the 'main' heroes of WWII.
That and the Soviets at Stalingrad.
