@Tyley61 If he didn't lose his seat in the 1997 election he more than likely would have been. The tories have been in a shambles as a party until recent times. After the 1992 election they had no direction whatsoever. Just look at their 1997 election campaign, it says it all really, and it went even worse from there.

@dezboss He is not right in everything he says. He has a view of history that a 6 year old would find embarrassing. Real history is apparently about 'heroes' and 'good vs evil'. It becomes cringeworthy when he starts invoking the SAS.

@usainlightning ah, the student room user!

The best leader the Conservative party never had. How could the membership have elected Ian Duncan Smith and Michael Howard instead of such a popular and charismatic politician?

Should have been leader, huge mistake to let him go.

@hooverdamman Because it's not like the Tories went into any countries to fight wars now is it?
I can understand with the mood of the English people so dramatically against the Conservatives at the time, why people couldn't see past the arrogance and in a way smarminess of Portillo and this speech.
But if you look past that, you can see that he is actually a very charismatic, strong and defiantly patriotic man. And he is right in everything he says, it doesn't matter how what state our Armed Forces are in now because we will always win. This speech certainly stirs the patriot within me.

What a speech particularly the end. Shame there's no Mps like this anymore. Instead the countries full of politically correct, boring, uncharismatic idiots.
