Pool 'm Up

A freeware game of Pool.

The game is split into two parts.

The first part is sort of an arcade Pool. For those who're not familiar with the rules (a minority I suspect), the object is to nominate either a lined or a circle patterned ball by pocketing it. Once you have selected your type, you must play with it for the remainder of the game. If you hit the non-nominated type on any of your shots first, you incur a foul. Likewise if you pocket a ball of the wrong type. If you pocket the black ball, the game is over. The black ball remains until the end of the match and the computer will designate a pocket you must hit it into.

This regular single player Pool mode accounts for the absence of a second player by exploding the other non-target balls at random every time you score. Penalties are very insignificant here. They accrue 250 penalty points, but the main part of the score is calculated by balls pocketed divided by shots taken times 10000. In other meanings, the more shots = the worse the score. Penalties/fouls are to be avoided, but not at the cost of making a more difficult shot. In fact, use it if you can.

The second round, the so-called bonus round, is necessary to secure a high score. What score you accrued in the first round is being reduced and it's a battle against time rather than shots taken.

I done really well in the first round here but terrible in the second. You aim for percentage in the first, but in the second your aim should be to get balls positioned for the easiest shot.

Here is another strategy... try hitting the middle ball on que lightly, dislodging the two balls at the back of rack only. Chose your target ball from one of those. Once you score one of those, one of the remaining balls in the rack will explode, creating a much easier distribution than smashing the rack on your initial shot. I've recorded my two best games (both in excess of 8000 points) using this method. In one of them, I scored every ball except for 1 in the second shot and fouled just once. 8)
