The hungu is an African musical instrument, ancestor of the Brazilian berimbau. Its origins are carried on in an ancient tradition. Inspired by the grace and raw beauty of African rock paintings, Nicolas Brault applies his narrative gifts to a world where humans and nature are subtly linked.

Under the African sun, a child walks in the desert with his kin. Death is prowling, but a mother's soul resurrected by music will return strength and life to the child when he becomes a man.

The filmmaker combines 2D animation on a graphics tablet with the warmth of sand animation, thus uniting modernity and tradition, Brazil and Africa, music and memory. Sparse in design and humanist in its outlook, Hungu exudes the elegance and suggestive power of a timeless story.

  • Whats wrong with being open minded to your culture? Years ago you guys were dying to be respected or to be noticed and now that we are viewing you're culture as a form of art you are taking offense to it? Dude seriously stop being childish. This is a multicultural world now. Open your mind.

  • You sound like a black version of Hitler.

  • 0:22-0:24 LOL

  • who was dying to be noticed?

  • weird.

  • this video as other of NFB ,is just LOL

  • visually and audio =BEAUTy!

Very creative- interesting to watch how he made the film. fyi -creator is Brazilian.

Profound message of the film should be acknowledged.

  • What heritage? Rap and all that other stuff isn't heritage (it was created in America). Its a genre of music. Here is a great original idea white people made; Its called Rock and Roll. And guess what? There were black musicians in that genre of music too. Ever heard of Jimi Hendrix? Yea he was black. But he didn't invent it either. Did that separate anything? No. So stop your complaining no one was doing anything offensive in this video. You're just very close minded.

  • Don't get me wrong it was fairly good I'm not deriding it but is this the actual film or a trailer.

  • Wow. I just found this in the description of one of chocobutch's videos:

"I know that we are scared and feel trapped but this attacking who people are has to stop. I for one have made conscious efforts to disengage and not jump into the barrel with the rest of the crabs."

Um...that's exactly the opposite of what she's doing. I agree with you...I hope she turns herself around, and it is sad to live life how she is.

  • I agree with Moonrise. Chocobutch (and what a splendidly eloquent name you have chosen for yourself) - give it a REST! This artist is not interested in (nor did he) exploiting anyone's culture.

Next you'll be protesting a Chinese person for opening a soul food restaurant. "oh, there they go stealing from us again"

I hope you can turn yourself around.

It's sad to live life the way you are.
