one of the most exciting players of all time, love his quirky tactical dynamism - underpinned by profound strategic awareness ofcourse else he'd just be another interesting player - deserved his shot at the WCC vs Gazza but the guy he beat by two clear points Kramnik was unfairly gifted the opportunity instead, they found sponsors to stage the two Ks. What's so undeserving about the blonde haired genius Alexei Shirov i wonder?

amazing victory

wow, i am speechless, i get giggly when i see games like that, when you mate down on material, it's simply amazing in my opinion, way more artistic than some pawn promotes to queen mate type deal.

you say that bxf8 is black's only move, but he could also play qe8.

Oh. Ok. I was more thinking of the players from the 1800s and 1900s. I'll look up what Wijk is. I want to start chess tournaments in my country Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean. I want to be the best too. :D

Wow! That was really beautiful indeed. I wanna do that. :D Do you think the players back then could beat the players of today?

Well, Shirov is still a top 20 player today. He came very close to winning the Wijk an Zee A group tournament outright in the Netherlands earlier this year. Generally, the level of play is much higher now than it was even ten or year fifteen years ago. Opening theory continues to evolve and with the assistance of computers and databases in preparing for matches, players have a wealth of information at their fingertips. There are more grandmasters now than ever before. Thanks for watching!

I am surprised that Black takes the gambit pawn. In seems in each example I have ever seen, accepting the gambit pawn leads into trouble for black.
What are the percentages of king's gambit accepted vs. declined lines?

It's perfectly acceptable to take the pawn, and with correct play, black can equalize so it is rarely seen at the top level any more. I would imagine white has a only a slight advantage, but at the club level, the king's gambit is a very effective opening. Without consulting a database I am not sure of the statistics of accepted vs. declined. I would imagine it is better to take the pawn and then plan on giving at back at some point.

I prefer after accepting the gambit to play h6 and g5 and after that Bg7. I think that is a very powerful system because Black is will still be a pawn up and leave white with almost no counterplay at all.

I agree. It is suicidal to go in for the Muzio gambit lines as black, but with care, black should have no problems stifling white's initiative. Thanks for watching! Maybe I should do a video on one of your games...
