Explains how electrolytic cells are used to produce materials widely used in industry. The chemistry and basic operation of the following processes are explored: aluminium smelting; sodium production (using the Downs cell); chlorine and NaOH production (using the membrane cell). Using Faraday's laws of electrolysis, calculations for both aluminium and sodium production are demonstrated.
For senior high school and tertiary students. Duration: 20 minutes.

  • I would say, I wish there was a small-scale, insulated downs cell that can be plugged into an ordiinary outlet to produce sodium metal... One that keeps the NaCl molten, electrically (via a heating element) with precise control. The problem is, if a small device could be operated in a residence, what the hell do you do with the Cl2 byproduct?? Release it into the atmosphere?? I think not! Any ideas??? How cool would it be to only add salt, use some electricity, and get pure sodium metal!!?
