  • Made by MBS, GIA, and International Entertainment (Italian/USA), this, Massimo Pupillo's directorial debut, is an effective, professionally made vehicle for Barbara Steele. She is Cleo, the widow of the occultist Dr. Hauff, a man who summons medieval creatures buried around his castle to avenge his murder. A lawyer (Walter Brandi) discovers that Steele, his employer (Riccardo Garrone) and other victims of the plague-spreading zombies were all guilty.

  • The lawyer escapes with the only innocent resident, Corrine (Mirella Maravidi aka Marilyn Mitchell), as purifying rain exorcizes the evil spell. The supernatural atmosphere is competently orchestrated with clear, luminous photography, aided by the turn-of-the-century setting. The erratic script doesn't give Steele much to do except look mysterious and perfidious, but her very presence considerably enhances the film's pictorial beauty.

  • Massimo Pupillo (aka Ralph Zucker) had started his career as a child actor and worked his way through the technical grades in film and television. He went on to direct IL BOIA SCARLATTO (1965) and LA VENDETTA DI LADY MORGAN (1966), but neither fulfilled the promise shown here, which suggests that this achievement may best be credited to the excellent cameraman, Carlo di Palma (aka Charles Brown).
