this is the best, no doubt, of the rach 3. and its a perfect tempo. it moves along. only talented people can play at this tempo, otherwise it sounds like a freakin dirge lol
Listen to Tamas Vasary with Yuri Ahronovitch. Emotionally and dramatically, it best personifies Rachmaninov's concepts of performance and takes into account the harmonic content of this superbly complex and powerful concerto. Playing Rachmaninov quickly is not the impressive, but with a general understanding of the whole phrase, the harmonic complexity and with that Russian soul is what makes it great. This is good, but far too fast. This is certainly not the best recording of Rach 3.
It's a great performance, very beautiful and passionate but it is far far too fast... The harmonic beauty in all the modulations and colors do not come out at such a speed. The weight of the harmonies simply do not come through! She does the same with Tchaikovsky's 1st Concerto, but it works there because of the relative harmonic weight. Listen to Tamas Vasary and Yuri Ahronovitch for the best performance... Emotionally and dramatically, it is the most powerful
she has a big force because her fat arms and the personality with very strength. She has also flexibility in her arms , thats the reason of her phenomenal technicke!!!
True, no prettier lady played faster than she did. A few bigger men do play with just as much speed, and perhaps with finer precision and more content. Here, as always, one senses a certain lightheadedness which is a mark of her playing. And everyone knows what Gergiev and Bronfman did with the Vienna Philharmonic a few years ago in Tokyo. The conductor has done his job, though. Bravo Chailly.
The third movment is indicated "Alla breve" : it's not a tempo indication (check the italian definition of the web), and "Alla breve" is generally used for "fast" playing. So, every pianist plays according to their own taste. But I agree with you on one point, Martha Argerich generally like to demonstrate his technical capacities in many pieces, and it is sometimes not adapted. A funny point : this piece was dedicated to the pianist Josef Hofmann who refused to play it because ... too hard.
