he interview, from February 2010 in Lund is presented by Utrikespolitiska föreningen Lund in cooperation with the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, CMES.

Rami talks about the transformations underway throughout the middle east in how power and legitimacy are exercised by various sectors of society, how a new balance of power is emerging between political elites, religious and tribal forces, and commercial business and ngo elements. this process of change is underway everythwre in the area and is ongoing, providing two elements that have long been missing from the region: checks and balances among powerful and legitimate indigenous forces, and mechanisms of self-determination that allow the people of he region to express themselves and help shape their state values and policies.

Rami George Khouri is a Palestinian-Jordanian and US citizen whose family resides in Beirut, Amman, and Nazareth. He is the Director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut as well as editor-at-large of the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper. He is an internationally syndicated political columnist and author.

Khouri was a visiting scholar at Stanford University in October 2006, and in November 2006, he was the co-recipient of the Pax Christi International Peace Award for his efforts to bring peace and reconciliation to the Middle East.
