  • What I prefer about this film compared to all the other ST films and most other "sci-fi" films in general is that here the crew had to use their intelligence rather then brute force to get through the situation. Not interesting for today's ADD, shoot-em-up culture.

  • One of the primary themes of this movie is life/death. The Enterprise's journey to the center of the energy cloud and into the V'Ger ship is a metaphor for the creation of new life, it is a literal representation of the fertilization for the new life that gets created at the film's ending. The relatively Enterprise - vast compared to you and I - but utterly minuscule compared to V'Ger - that scene is forever burned in me as with the music it was so powerful.

  • @manco82 Wasn't very interesting to people when it came out either. Not to mention the fact that the show was far more thrilling than this movie was.

  • @bumblebert No emotion? What the heck, man?

The movie's ALL ABOUT emotion and it's merits! Spock and Vejur alike are searching for their idea of perfection through the rejection of sentiment and collection of simple knowledge but, as Spock discovers, that is a barren and cold way to deal with life, the universe and everything. It's that simple feeling of friendship, love, imperfection and embracing that fallibility that allows us mere beings to define our own signifigance.

  • @UndyingNephalim Yeah, man.

And even there, Vejur itself isn't characterized by violence or explosions, it simply vanishes the aggressing little things. That's something entirely different from expectations of tacticool reactor overloads and space militaria, it's something utterly alien and mysterious and inexplicable. It's the Other for the familiarity of pew pew, boom boom.

  • @UndyingNephalim You're right. This is a very positive view of the future and Starfleet is presented as an exploration/science authority , rather than peacekeeping/military. The only use of Starfleet weaponry is to destroy the asteroid in the wormhole. If there had been more time to develop the script, it would have been a stronger film. The rushed schedule of the production left the film unable to reach its aspirations properly. Still it's admirable what Roddenberry was attempting.

  • Nice. Always since I first saw this in the theater so long ago, I always see it as the "demon face." Jerry Goldsmith score even exemplified that.

  • @manco82

I have to agree, this film is proof that not every story has to be solved by a violent act of agression or some climatic fight. The only action scene in the whole movie at at the very start when the Klingons attempt to stop V'ger with brute force, and they fail utterly to stop V'ger because of it. Of all the movies this one probably is the closest to Roddenberry's ideal future.

  • the reason this film only really works as a curates egg is that it didn't allow for any emotional story or humour; which was always what made the series so good. It's too cold and is all plot. It does have a glacial beauty to it though...and the effects are STILL impressive plus Goldsmith's score is genuinely beautiful. How did they do that "orifice" thing before CGI as well?

  • The latest "Star Trek" movie is more appropriate for the "Fast and Furious" culture, complete with car wreck.

  • @manco82 i agree.

  • @Nowhereman10 What is the rotational energy of the sun?

The rotational energy of the Earth given by wikipedia 2.58 x10^29 J.

One answer gives the sun's rotational energy as approx. 1.4 x10^36 J.
